WTO to analyze U.S.-China dispute on grain import quotas

GENEVA, Aug 30 (Reuters) – The World Trade Organization said on Monday it would evaluation a extensive-standing dispute in between the China and the United States on Beijing’s use of import controls for rice, wheat and corn.

The Geneva-dependent trade watchdog ruled in 2019 against China’s use of tariff-rate quotas for agricultural imports, which Washington properly argued had constrained market entry for U.S. grain exports. Such quotas permit a specified amount of goods to be imported at reduced charges than typical.

China has said it has since implemented the WTO suggestions but the United States does not concur and past month explained it was entitled to take “countermeasures” from Beijing, without having supplying particulars of the stage of retaliation.

“The United States is not in a placement to agree with China that it has occur into compliance with the DSB (dispute settlement system) recommendations in this dispute,” a U.S. delegate instructed the closed-door conference on Monday, according to responses shared by the U.S. mission in Geneva.

Even so, the delegate expressed a willingness to get the job done with Beijing to solve the dispute.

China’s mission in Geneva did not promptly reply to a ask for for remark.

A trade official attending the assembly claimed China’s delegate expressed deep issue about the U.S. method to this dispute, adding that it was up to Washington to demonstrate it was at fault.
